As a Christian, getting into the Film or Television business sometimes has a stigma attached to it.
“Why would you want to work in such a dark industry?”
“It’s full of lost, wicked, nasty people.”
“Just look at Hollywood – those people are a total mess.”
“Stay away from that den of vipers!”
But we Christians are called to this industry precisely because it is filled with darkness. If we are called to be the light of the world, Matthew 5:14, then don’t you think we should go into dark places? I thought so.
The most important reason for me, or you, to get involved in media is because of one simple, irrefutable fact: Media leads Culture. There was a time when media reflected the culture of the day. Remember those terrific movies by Frank Capra, “It’s A Wonderful Life” and “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington?” That was a time when media reflected our ethical, moral, and spiritual culture. Now, media actually influences and drives our culture, usually in a very negative way. Movies, television shows and Internet content are now the forerunners of what our culture will become. Does that scare you? It scares me! It’s time that we as Christians start to influence media, so that our media will start to influence our culture in a positive way.
We are called to media because media needs Christian values. The best way for us to be an influence on our culture is for us to influence media. Movies, television, Internet content, music, video games, and all other entertainment and informational mediums need Christ-centered values to infiltrate their content. Change the media and we’ll change the culture.
The enemy is not going to let go of media easily. It’s going to be war. So, we as God’s Media Army need to be ready, trained, and equipped to go into battle. We can’t take this lightly. The enemy is going to attack us with anything he can, so we must make sure that there is nothing that he can use against us. Put on your armor, Ephesians 6:10–18, and get ready to take out the enemy.
B. Devotional Teaching
In the first chapter of the book of Daniel, the nation of Judah loses a war with Babylon, and some of the royal family and nobility of Judah are brought to Babylon to serve in the king’s palace. Among those brought to Babylon are Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. During their training period of three years, the king assigned them a daily amount of food and wine from his own table. After the training they were to enter the king’s service, but Daniel resolved not to defile himself with the royal food and wine. He asked the chief official for permission to eat only vegetables. The official said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has assigned your food and drink. Why should he see you looking worse than the other young men your age? The king would then have my head because of you.”
Daniel then said to the chief official, “Please test your servants for ten days. Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see.” So the official agreed to this and tested them for ten days.
At the end of the ten days, Daniel and his friends looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the official took away their choice food and the wine, and gave them vegetables instead.
There is a key concept to be learned from this story. As God’s Media Army, our first responsibility is to live a lifestyle of righteousness. Daniel decided to set himself apart, not to defile himself, and not to partake in the “royal food.” We already know about the seductive spirit of Hollywood and the media industry. We have heard the stories of good people succumbing to the lusts of the flesh and the love of money. This is the reason that we need to check our motivations and make a conscious choice to live a life of righteousness in order to guard against the media’s spirit of seduction or “royal food.”
The story of Daniel goes on: to Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds. At the end of the time of training, the chief official presented them to the king of Babylon. The king talked with them and he found none equal to Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom.
Our second responsibility is to strive for excellence in everything that we produce. As God’s Media Army, with access to supernatural creativity supplied by God, we should be creating and producing media content that not only rivals anything that the world produces but surpasses it. God gave Daniel and his friends knowledge and understanding, and they were found to be ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in the kingdom. God can do the same for us. If we follow Daniel’s lead and live a life of righteousness, God will be faithful to give us knowledge, understanding and creativity so that we can produce media that is ten times better than anything that the Hollywood “kingdom” can produce.
I encourage you to live a life of righteousness, seek God’s supernatural creativity, and get out there and write, produce, direct, shoot, and edit media content that edifies, enlightens, and empowers. Let’s create “Kingdom” media, and impact nations, transform mindsets, and change culture.
